Mitra Phukan is an award-winning writer, translator, columnist, and trained Shastriya Sangeet vocalist. Her eighteen published volumes include children's books; biographies, including one on Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika; three novels — The Collector's Wife, A Monsoon of Music, and What Will People Say — and a collection of short stories, A Full Night's Thievery, all brought out by major publishing houses.
She has translated celebrated Assamese authors into English, including Jnanpith awardee Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya's Blossoms in the Graveyard, Sahitya Akademi awardee Harekrishna Deka's Guilt and Other Stories, and Arupa Patangia Kalita's The Owl, the River and the Valley, among others. She has also selected, partly translated, and edited The Greatest Assamese Stories Ever Told. Her column, "All Things Considered," in The Assam Tribune, is widely read, and she writes frequently on Indian music.
Mitra Phukan's works have been extensively anthologised, and she herself has been translated into several other languages. Her fiction is taught in schools, colleges, and universities across the country, and has been the subject of numerous research papers.
