Sutapa Basu On Stories That Time Cannot Wither: Author Sutapa Basu converses about 'Princesses, Monsters and Magical Creatures' In Conversation with Yajnaseni Chakraborty

On 28th Nov 12.00 pm - 12.40 pm

In recent times, children's literature has taken a new turn in the West, and Ms Sutapa Basu wishes to turn children's attention to Folk Tales and Iconic Stories of India. Author Sutapa Basu tried to make children familiar with the landscape of Bengal and introduced them to the various places through her stories. She translated the book so that children today would enjoy the magic of Takuma Julie. She enjoyed learning that children find it really interesting when sound effects are incorporated into the stories. Sound effects of the Bengali and English Language in her stories gave it a fun twist. She talked about how we have to look to the West for children's literature often, and that is precisely why Ms Basu wanted to write her stories so that a feeling of Nationalism and patriotism will arise in our children. She wishes to rediscover our nation's authors and their stories and promote our rich literature. She feels that the reinforcement of national identity should start young. Further in the session, she talked about her favourite books to read and translate. The session was an absolute success as we had an enthusiastic and passionate author and a moderator who matched her energy with ease. This was a fantastic session by Author Sutapa Basu at OCLF 2021!
