Sanjaya Baru is a political commentator, author, policy analyst, and economist. He is a Distinguished Fellow at the United Services Institution of India (USI). He was PM Manmohan Singh's media advisor and chief spokesperson (PMO) for 4 years. He has been the Associate Editor of India's prominent financial newspapers like The Economic Times and The Times of India and was a Chief Editor of Business Standard and Financial Express.
He served as the Secretary General of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry for a year. He is also a former Director of Geo-economics and Strategy at the International Institute of Strategic Studies, London.
He has several books based on politics and economics under his name including The Strategic Consequences of India's Economic Rise (2006), India and the World: Essays on Geo-economics and Foreign Policy( 2016), The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh (2014), and 1991: How PV Narasimha Rao Made History (2016).
He has been an editor of books like Powers Shifts and Trade Blocs (2015), The Bombay Plan: A Blueprint for Economic Resurgence (2018), Beyond Covid's Shadow: Mapping Indian Economy's Resurgence (2020), India's Power Elite: Caste, Class and a Cultural Revolution (Penguin Viking, 2021), The New Cold War: Henry Kissinger and the Rise of China (HarperCollins, 2021).
He is a Founder-Trustee of the Forum for National Security Studies and is a former member of India's National Security Advisory Board. He was a member of the Governing Board of the Centre for Policy Research and a Visiting Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, Singapore, and the Indian School of Public Policy, Delhi. He was a professor of economics at the University of Hyderabad and the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations. He was also a member of India-ASEAN Eminent Persons Group-2010. He is an Independent Director on the board of Wockhardt Ltd.
